Raising Achievement workshops 23 rd/14 th February 2010 with Dave Cryer
Two days of drama workshops took place on the 23 rd and 24 th of February celebrating selected books and the enjoyment of reading.
The first session was held in the library with 7 ST and lead on from a scheme of work based on the book “The Mousehole Cat” by Antonia Barber. The group were very familiar with the story as we had done lots of work surrounding the book previously including finding out about the county of Cornwall, the link in the book to the Penlee lifeboat disaster and tasting “Star Gazey Pie”, a delicacy mentioned in the story.
Dave Cryer read from the book and lead the students in some scripted drama pieces surrounding the storyline. We also discussed the Penlee lifeboat disaster an the perils of the unpredictable weather and bravery of the volunteers who man the boats.
The second workshop took place in the LSU and was based on the books of Darren Shan. Mrs Goucher, Mrs Chubsey and myself talked about some of our favourite books and we did the ever-popular “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” exercise which demonstrates the importance of trying new authors and different genres with the help of a lot of chocolate.
Everybody joined in with the drama and there was a particularly enjoyable script reading from Dave and Richard rounding things off.
