The Mousehole Cat

The Mousehole Cat, Cornwall and the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster

By Year 7

A full half term was spent in the library doing work on the award winning book by Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley called “The Mousehole Cat”.

First we read the book and then watched the animated film. We discussed the illustrations and story in great detail then set about researching and making our own illustrations.

The story is set in a village called Mousehole, at the far end of England in the County of Cornwall. Everyone really enjoyed finding out about Tom Bawcock and his cat Mowzer and how they braved the great storm cat to go fishing and save the villagers from certain starvation. Part of the story involves all sorts of fish recipes and we enjoyed a taste of “Star Gazey Pie” a dish where fishes come leaping out of the pastry!

We also did research on the Penlee Lifeboat disaster as this ties in with the story, and shows how treacherous the weather can be and how brave the Lifeboat volunteers are.

Please come and look at the display in the library and find out about the story of “The Mousehole Cat”

The display includes work by:-

Owen Bird, Owen Howarth, Jessica Wallace, Ryan Thorpe, Michael Spouse, Jak Van Den Tooren, Jack McGhee and Keith Bailey.
