Reports which describe accurately how a pupil is performing, how they can get better and reflect something of the relationship we have with our students will support our work. Reports which contain inaccurate information or messages conveyed in ‘teacher-speak’ will do us and the relationships we have with our community huge amounts of damage.
All students in the school will receive one full written report a year and two grade reports which are generated from each assessment.
Reports will contain a variety of types of data; target grades, current performance grades, attitude levels, target actions and narrative comments.
There is no room for censure or praise in the allocation of attainment grades. We would not give a ‘U’ grade to act as a warning, or an ‘A’ grade to celebrate good effort. Assessment grades are simply shorthand indicators of performance based on assessment evidence.
Target(s) are set for each subject to inform the pupil’s progress. These targets should be specific and related to the Scheme of Work and the level of that student’s performance. Pupils should be able to understand the target set and be able to relate it to the work they are doing. Subject teachers, Form Teachers and Heads of Year will be engaged in discussions, on a planned basis in which targets set will be reviewed. In addition, targets set will inevitably form the basis of discussions with parents and students at Parents’ Evenings and School Review days.
In addition to the annual full, written report the school will also issue grade reports each assessment round. This grade sheet will contain grades from the most recent assessments. No comment sheets will be included. The grade report will be sent home and used to monitor progress and as a focus for review and target setting activities.
Pupils who have performed well on their full written report are sent for by the Headteacher to be congratulated. Pupils who have reports which are a cause for concern will be identified for support and monitoring by their Head of Year.
The reporting process will also provide information to the school ‘Mentoring’ activities. Targets will be the focus for discussions with mentored pupils to help them improve their grades.
