Reports

Introduction to Reporting

All students at The Armthorpe School receive two short assessment reports and a full report per year. The reports take the same format throughout all year groups and include attainment data for each term, a target grade/level and a “Behaviour for Learning” grade. Each subject teacher selects a “Behaviour for Learning Target” and a “Learning Target” for individual students, which will guide and advise them towards improvement / advancement.

In the case of full reports, a comment will be added by the subject teachers giving a brief account of student progress and focus areas for the future. A comment from Form Tutors will advise parents on student personal and social development during the course of the academic year a nd the Senior Leadership comment will briefly summarise key aspects of the report, identifying positive features, as well as reinforcing the main priorities for further progress and Behaviour for Learning.

When parents have read and discussed the assessment report with their children, it is helpful to have a response on the relevant form provided sent into school. The assessment report is our way of recording each child’s many achievements during their time here, but is also much more than that – it is central to the process of guidance which the school follows.

Parents can discuss the student report with staff at Parents’ Evenings; appointments can also be made by parents to talk over the report with Form Tutors or Heads of Year and, if appropriate, with specific subject teachers. The school stores a copy of every assessment report in the student record within our Management Information System.

Short Reports

This is an example of a short report which students will receive twice a year during their time in the school. Various areas have been colour coded to link with the descriptors given beneath the document:

Attendance

The report begins with student attendance which is shown in three sections: Overall attendance shown as a percentage, Authorised/Unauthorised Absences showing the number of absences the student has had up to the date shown.

End of year Target

Based on KS2 prior attainment and the school’s own KS2-4 progress table. Student progress against end of year targets is reviewed and, if necessary, amended upwards at the end of each year.

Current Attainment (level or grade)

Based on a range of assessments carried out since the last reporting point. Typically, this range will encompass: classroom based assessments, homework, module exam results, standardised assessments, controlled conditions assessments, coursework.

Behaviour for Learning level

A four point scale (1 - Outstanding, 2 - Good, 3 - Satisfactory, 4 - Inadequate) is used by all teachers to identify the extent to which a student has taken responsibility for his or her learning during the period since the last assessment.

Behaviour for Learning target

Indicates a range of desirable learning behaviours at four different levels which correspond to the BfL scale (above). Teachers select the most appropriate target to indicate students’ priority during the next assessment cycle.

Subject Target

These are set by the subject teachers to identify areas a student needs to respond to in order to improve.

Full Reports

Full reports (produced once a year) follow the same format as that illustrated previously for short reports but with the addition of a box for teacher comments:

Comments

A comment written by the subject teachers with regards to students current performance, progress made and curriculum content, student achievements and suggestions of focus areas for improvement to attainment.

Summary Comment Sheet

Attached to the student full report will be a Summary Comment sheet containing comments given by Form Tutors and/or Senior Leadership Team or Head of Year.
