The PE programme is designed to allow all our pupils to develop their physical skills and health and well being through PE and we also provide the opportunity to develop other key skills including working with others, communication, problem solving, creativity, independent learning and citizenship. This provides a rich environment for our pupils to develop their self confidence and so raise their self esteem. Every pupil is encouraged and helped to develop a positive attitude towards involvement in sport as a performer, a spectator and as an official.
At Key Stage 3 pupils experience twelve different activities across five different National Curriculum Areas of Games, Athletics, Dance, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Gymnastics. At Key Stage 4 all pupils study GCSE Physical Education at either full course or short course level and this gives them the opportunity to specialise in those areas where they can perform at the highest level. Some pupils choose to extend their studies and select the BTEC option which enables them to take a wider view of the sporting industry. The department has a good record of success at GCSE with 60% of pupils achieving a grade at C or above. For more information regarding Key Stage 4 courses.
In the sixth form AS and A2 Sport Studies is a successful and popular option and for those pupils who seek a wider more vocational route we also offer a BTEC option. Again the department has a good record of success at this level with students going on to study a range of sport related courses at university.
There are a range of extra curricular activities available including a thriving inter school fixture list and recreational activities. The inter house competitions are well supported and a growing number of pupils are involved in the Sports Leaders programme at all levels. The department has a well developed PESSCL programme for all the schools within our pyramid working in partnership and those pupils who show particular interest or aptitude are encouraged and supported to join local clubs and so extend their participation. We are able to celebrate success, both individual and team at local, regional and national level.
The department currently has a sportshall, a gymnasium, a fitness room, a dance studio, hard court areas and extensive playing fields. We use local woodland for outdoor and adventurous activities and work has already begun on the development of a cardio gym which will allow the development of a separate weights area. We also have two classrooms equipped with interactive technology and the facility to record and play back performances to allow for analysis and coaching.
We have high expectations and standards with regard to participation and PE kit. Details of the school uniform for Physical Education are given in the School Prospectus and it is possible to buy much of the kit from school though parents are free to purchase the kit from other suppliers. The only exception to this is the rugby shirt which is custom made and only available from school.

In addition to their specialist PE teaching qualification all the PE staff have additional coaching qualifications in a variety of sports, We also work with coaches from local clubs and enjoy visits from several sporting celebrities. Pupils are given the opportunity to visit sporting events locally and nationally to extend their experience.
Our aim is to equip every child with an interest and enjoyment in sport to take with them through life.
